The story of mother and daughter, the feeling that is passed on from generation to generation.
How do you deal with that? Dwell on it or be optimistic about the future?
In this work a parallel is made between the powerful nature of the island of Curaçao and the
dynamics between mother and daughter. Both have a difficult history, but at some point it is time
to look to the future.

Island of Healing (2022) describes the relationship with my mother which has been the core inspiration for this project. The daughter is depicted as rebellious, ambitious, fierce and thoughtful, whilst the mother is timid, protective and has a fear of the future. These characteristics appear in the visuals of the clothing as well as in the spoken word of the performance written and performed by the actrice and spoken word artist Nadira Jansen, who plays the mother character, and by me who plays the daughter character.
Next to my embodied experience, the book The Deep by Rivers Solomon inspired the visuals, clothing and textual references to the history of black women, the impact of the rough waters on our bodies, and the longing for the future.
